Lauren Mayberry brought the Vicious Creature tour to Austin’s Scoot Inn in celebration of her debut solo release. With Cult of Venus kicking off the night with her hypnotic synth-pop tracks, Mayberry proved that a midweek gig could be a sweet escape. After her first four songs, all from her new album, she took a moment to acknowledge the lively atmosphere, quipping that it was impressive for a Wednesday night and thanking the audience for showing up with such enthusiasm. Her gratitude felt genuine, and the crowd responded with even more energy.
One of the night’s most memorable moments came during her performance of “Something in the Air.” Armed with a megaphone, Mayberry swayed back and forth as the crowd mirrored her. What stood out most was the crowd itself—a remarkably diverse group that reflected Mayberry’s wide-reaching appeal. Her infectious energy on stage seemed to ripple through the audience, creating an atmosphere so captivating that fans rarely reached for their phones.
Her set took a magical turn as she transitioned from piano ballad “Are You Awake?” into her cover of The Verve’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” As she erupted into the full song, a disco ball cast its shimmering light across the crowd and as if on cue, the wind picked up, adding an almost cinematic touch to the moment. It was hard to tell whether the full body chills were from the music or the breeze. With her magnetic stage presence and heartfelt gratitude, Mayberry proved that her solo artistry is as powerful as it is personal.
