Historic San Francisco music and arts festival Noise Pop brought out electronic artist, Mareux, for a debut performance in the city. A week-long festival with several acts performing at various iconic Bay Area venues, Noise Pop celebrated its 30th anniversary with acts like Mareux on their lineup that highlights the best up-and-coming independent music. If you have a TikTok account, chances are that you’ve heard Mareux’s hit single, “The Perfect Girl,” while scrolling your ‘For You’ page.
While the crowd eagerly awaited to hear the smash single, attendees danced the night away to romantic, electronic goth music that Mareux is best known for. Their setlist included hits like “Summertime,” receiving loud cheers from the crowd, in addition to first-time plays like newly released single “Night Vision,” and never-before-performed “Roses.”
When the end of the night finally rolled around and the first few chords of “The Perfect Girl” began to fill the venue, the crowd immediately recognized what they were about to hear. Instantaneously, a sea of smartphones rose in the crowd, ready to capture the live version of one of the most trending songs on social media this past year. As soon as Aryan Ashtiani, the artist behind Mareux, began to sing “You’re such a strange girl,” you could hear fans repeating the lyrics word-for-word.
It’s safe to say that Mareux had an incredibly successful first show in San Francisco for one of the city’s most celebrated festivals championing music and arts. So much so that after sharing their goodbyes and walking off stage, an abrupt chant swelled from the crowd yelling, “Encore! Encore!” yearning for more. As obliged, Mareux returned to the stage for one final serenade to perform “Glass” alongside Kris Esfandiari of King Woman, who features on the song, just before officially closing out the show.
