Based in Los Angeles, California, TV Girl is an American indie pop trio. Brad Petering (lead guitar, vocals), Jason Wyman (drums), and Wyatt Harmon (keys) performed a memorable set in Brooklyn, NY on August 19th, 2022. Zoe Zeeman (electric guitar, bass) joined the trio on stage for the show.
TV Girl’s tour began in California on August 10th in Berkeley. There, they played two shows at the UC Theater before traveling south to the LA area. After a show in LA and Pomona, they then moved on to Chicago. Finally, the tour concluded with a show in Brooklyn, NY.
Their performance was brilliant with Petering using “crowd work” to introduce several of their songs and to generate humor in his performance. With obvious sarcasm prevalent in his story-telling, “Hate Yourself” was introduced as a direct contrast to Justin Beiber’s “Love Yourself.” The two “allegedly” had a competition to see which emotion was strongest: love or hate. And, to prove the “argument” they wrote two songs. The number of streams was decided to dictate the winner (spoiler alert: Justin Beiber won). Of course, none of this happened in reality as it was a made-up story, but it generated laughter from the crowd and was a perfect lighthearted way to introduce “Hate Yourself.”
With the same crowd work tactic, TV Girl introduced “Cigarettes Out the Window,” which, “allegedly,” was written for Harry Styles. Based on TV Girl’s story-telling, the song was written for Harry Styles, but, after a night of drinking together, Styles denied the song as it was too “perfect” and “magical.” Styles allegedly stated that the song was perfect for TV Girl. Though made-up, it was (again) a perfect way to introduce a song of theirs.
Songs like “Birds Out the Window,” “Lover’s Rock,” and “King of Echo Park” resulted in cheers from the crowd as fans were excited to hear their favorite songs. Many fans were dancing and drinking together. Many embraced one another as “Lover’s Rock” blared from the speakers. And, to make the moment more memorable, TV Girl stated “Life is shit. There’s nothing but pain. There’s no hope:” a quote that would remain engraved in the minds of the concert-goers for the rest of the show.
All in all, TV Girl’s show in Brooklyn was a perfect closing to their 2022 Summer Tour.
