NEW MUSIC: Ella Galvin’s Single “Do Not Disturb”

APRIL 12, 2024 | BY TABITA BERNARDUS

New York-based artist Ella Galvin is clearly on her way to sparkly stardom, and we’re buckled up and ready to witness it. She indulges her curiosity over someone new in her latest single “Do Not Disturb,” setting the scene with the opening lines, “Phone on do not disturb / But I’m letting all your notifications come through.”

It’s sonically bright and playful with a bouncy tempo that upholds its shape– a direct contrast to Galvin’s last release “Spare Me,” showcasing her experimental range as an artist. Her voice floats through the chorus with the right amount of whimsical nature as she finds herself questioning how she feels about the person: “Why do I care so little? / What’s it gonna turn into?” she wonders without fully overthinking it.

“I wrote this song about a situationship I was in last year,” says Galvin. “Late at night on the weekend when I didn’t go out, I would put my phone on ‘Do Not Disturb’ but allowed notifications from this person. The lighthearted and energetic vibe, with a touch of playful over-editing, mirrors the carefree attitude I had towards this relationship. The song reflects my strange indifference but intrigue towards this relationship.”

She seems to get it right on this skeptic-filled, shimmering track, capturing the youthful energy towards an ambiguous relationship that we’re sure every person has experienced before. She drops the ultimate cherry on top with a muffled voice memo at the very end: “I’m so sick of hearing from you. I never want to talk to you again” she chides the person, concluding both the song and the relationship.

It’s refreshing to watch Galvin approach music like an endless playground, giving herself full permission to explore and create without any limits. We’re excited to see what else she’ll sprinkle into her upcoming debut EP due later this year.

“Do Not Disturb” is now available for listening on all your favorite music streaming platforms.
