CHICAGO, IL | MAY 31, 2023 | BY MICHAEL IZQUIERDO

It was a full circle moment for Australian rockstar Alex Lahey as she made a triumph return to Chicago, playing a sold-out show at Schubas Tavern — a six year gap since her last appearance at the same venue. Celebrating Pride Month eve, queer people illuminated the dimly lit room and showed out in numbers for the openly lesbian performer and opening act, fellow gay and non-binary rockstar Liza Anne. Only releasing her third studio album The Answer is Always Yes just shy of two weeks earlier, the crowd was singing along word-for-word to the tune of every newly released track Lahey performed — and a few ’ol classics sprinkled in there.Lahey opened up her set with classics off her new album, performing “On The Way Down,” “They Wouldn’t Let Me In” and “You’ll Never Get Your Money Back” to keep the crowd on their feet and prepped for a night full of emotional highs and lows. She played “Wes Anderson” of her debut EP B-Grade University and “I Haven’t Been Taking Care of Myself” from her debut album I Love You Like a Brother that really cut deep and showed her vulnerable lyricism. If Alex Lahey is ever performing in your town and you’re questioning to buy tickets, let it be known that the answer is always yes.
