The night was nothing short of magical as Lord Huron took to the stage at Toronto’s historic Massey Hall for the first of two sold-out shows. The elaborate desert scene that was built for this tour’s set truly added to the band’s songs and transported you to feeling as if you were there on a moonlit evening, hearing every intricate sound around you.
The group played through an impressive 23-track setlist, adding a nice mixture from each of their albums covering something for everyone’s tastes. The lights fastened to the mountains and boulder platforms were interactive throughout, changing in color and frequency in tune to the tracks. There was also a lit monogram of the band’s logo, which was lowered about midway through the show to many cheers. Frontman Ben Schneider had a few surprises in store, sharing some stories about his personal connection to Toronto and visiting often from Detroit during his childhood, and also recalling running into a group of fans earlier in the day while visiting a tourist attraction who were in attendance.
Later in the set, Ben walked behind the stage set, and quickly reappeared with a skull mask and cowboy hat just before playing “The World Ender”, a recurring theme from their previous performances. Favorites such as “The Night We Met” were reserved for the encore, for which parts of the chorus the microphone was faced out to the crowd to have them sing the lyrics. The band also covered Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” and did a great job at keeping their distinct sound in the mix.
The band will be playing festival dates throughout the summer, with stops in Western Canada, as well as the Midwest and Florida. They should absolutely be on your list to catch if you are into indie rock and folk, as they are arguably one of the best in the genre, especially when it comes to witnessing their talent in person.
