GALLERY: The Hydrant

BALI, ID | APRIL 14, 2023 | BY MARIA LOBO

The Hydrant band exhibited their remarkable talent with an entertaining performance filled with lively music, rattle & shaking, whiskey, and an abundance of amusement in the lively town of Canggu, Bali.

The band was formed in 2004, and they specialise in rockabilly and they have released five  albums. The musical group consists of Marshello (lead vocals, guitar and harmonica), Vincent (guitar), Adi (bass), Christopper (stand-up drums). Andreas joins the band as an additional trumpetist and Magda as additional singer. They quickly gained popularity due to their distinctive style, which is heavily influenced by legends like Elvis Presley, Stray Cats and all that 50s zeitgeist. They have been acknowledged as trailblazers in the rejuvenation of 1950s rock and roll music since that time. The musical group has travelled extensively, performing in various locations including vibrant Indonesian cities, the European landmass,  Australia, and of course, the headquarter of rockabilly: Las Vegas, baby!

Their dynamic and distinctive stage presence captivated and entertained the viewers. Marshello's magnetic personality and persistent engagement with the audience, (he is also known as ‘Brown Elvis’), instil a sense of inclusion in the performance and the chance to shine like a celebrity for a single evening. Marshello and Magda's performance of some of their hits like Jalan- Jalan (written in 2000 and released in 2004), Who you really love (2021) and Why Why Why (2019), generated such powerful chemistry that the crowd rose and danced, transforming the event into a cheerful and euphoric celebration.

The thrill escalated as the quartet smoothly harmonised their talents in energetic tracks, like Rockin Tonight ( Elvis Presley’s cover) and Shake Rhythm Jive (2021). This was accompanied by bass and guitar cool riffs, and drums and trumpet solos. Chris even stood on the top of the drums which made it look more powerful. Tourists, expats and locals merged into one, celebrating the music of the one and only The Hydrant. A great gig full of passion, energy and excitement!
