Fresh off the release of their latest full-length, “Catharsis”, Covet captured the ears and hearts of the sold-out crowd at Lee’s Palace on Saturday night. The 3-piece group, led by guitarist and vocalist Yvette Young, supported by bassist Brandon Dove, and Jessica Burdeaux, made sure that there were treats in store for every fan novice and seasoned.
The math-rock band, as they are often categorized, leans more into the emotional side, with soaring harmonies in the guitars, and groove in the rhythm section, of which the vast majority of their discography is instrumental. Considering this, the audience was fully invested throughout the set, truly watching each member’s every move and swaying along at points in a trance-like state to their performance.
Yvette and Brandon checked in with their fans throughout the set, remarking about how Toronto was one of their favourite cities to play in, including how they re-visited a choice local restaurant nearby the venue earlier in the day. This soft-spoken and casual approach was quite the contrast to the sheer talent and detail each of them brought with their playmaking.
Opening with “coronal”, an outlier which features delicate vocals from Yvette, the band set to business and brought everyone through a journey focusing on their newest tracks, and later in the set touching on a couple favourites, such as “shibuya”. After the initial 11-track setlist, the crowd screamed for more, of which the members returned back to the stage and performed “atreyu” for their encore and closer for the night. There were some other treats, such as Brandon switching out his bass for violin on “odessa”, and bringing out guest Robert Nordli for a saxophone solo on “lovespell”.
To sum things up, this is a band that you absolutely must experience live and you will be left completely blown away by. They are currently mid-way through a North American tour, of which the remaining dates bring them through the Midwest and circling back to their home state of California.
